Start your Ashtanga Yoga journey with Mia at Sunbeam Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a powerful tool to tune your body and balance your mind. A regular yoga practice improves focus, balance and coordination. A swift and intense set of asanas instils a better sense of rhythm and increases your awareness of the movement and flow of your body. The breathwork we practice during our yoga classes has been shown to reduce stress, increase alertness and boost your immune system. For centuries yogis have used breath control, or ‘pranayama’, to promote concentration and improve vitality.

I wanted to get back in to doing some yoga again after a long break from it, (after having my son)… I came to my first session with Mia last Friday and absolutely LOVED IT! Felt perfectly stretched, in a relaxed, and calm setting. The space is perfectly tranquil overlooking nature. Excited to be back practicing and to have found Sunbeam Yoga!!!

The Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga

What is Ashtanga yoga?

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a style of yoga popularised by K. Pattabhi Jois during the 20th century. Ashtanga yoga is often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga. The style is energetic, synchronising breath with movements. Ashtanga yoga is a type of yoga based on eight principles (limbs) and consisting of a series of poses (asanas) executed in swift succession, combined with deep, controlled breathing (pranayama).

Who can join?

Everyone can benefit from a regular Ashtanga yoga practice! Whether you’re a man, woman or child, young or old, bendy or inflexible, come along and see the difference in how a yoga class makes you feel. Ashtanga yoga is perfect for those looking to start their yoga journey. Each asana is adaptable in that as you progress, you can improve on the depth of your pose, as and when you and your body are ready. So, Ashtanga yoga is perfect for beginners!

How does it help me?

When you practice Ashtanga yoga, it can help you really connect with yourself. It’s a form of yoga that you can practice in your daily life, bringing balance and focus to everything you do. Everything is conducted by the breath, your vital force, or ‘prana’. The greatest benefits of Ashtanga yoga are not only physical well-being and mental relaxation but also a renewed calmness and spirituality.

What is a class like?

During our Ashtanga yoga class, I will take you through a flowing set of poses (asanas). I will gently help adjust your posture and guide you with your breathwork. Yoga has been found to improve quality of life, immune system, reduce stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression and back pain. It has also been found to lower heart rate and blood pressure. Yoga also improves overall fitness, strength and flexibility.

My connection with yoga

My introduction to yoga came whilst I was living a very hectic and stressful life, professionally. Having enjoyed the physical benefits attending local yoga classes offered, I completed by Ashtanga yoga teacher training course with Brian Cooper PHD, supervised by Helen McCabe and Scott Parsons. It was during this time that I really started to be aware of the positive mental benefits of a regular Ashtanga yoga practice.

In 2013, I started Sunbeam Yoga. I teach a led, primary Ashtanga yoga class, which we always close with a relaxing body scan (savasana) and a sound bowl. My students are from all age groups and abilities. I love being an Ashtanga Yoga teacher and seeing my yogis progress and benefit from their practice.
