Meet Mia & start your Yoga journey at Sunbeam Yoga.

My introduction to yoga came whilst I was living a very hectic and stressful life, professionally. Having enjoyed the physical benefits attending local yoga classes offered, I completed by Ashtanga yoga teacher training course with Brian Cooper PHD, supervised by Helen McCabe and Scott Parsons. It was during this time that I really started to be aware of the positive mental benefits of a regular Ashtanga yoga practice.

In 2013, I started Sunbeam Yoga. I teach a led, half primary series Ashtanga yoga class, which we always close with a relaxing body scan (savasana) and the soothing tones of my Tibetan sound bowls. My students are from all age groups and abilities. I love being a Yoga teacher and seeing my yogis progress and benefit from their practice.

I wanted to get back in to doing some yoga again after a long break from it, (after having my son)… I came to my first session with Mia last Friday and absolutely LOVED IT! Felt perfectly stretched, in a relaxed, and calm setting. The space is perfectly tranquil overlooking nature. Excited to be back practicing and to have found Sunbeam Yoga!!!

Yoga is the gift that never stops giving.

I live my life through yoga, yoga is my life, it doesn’t stop off the mat.

On the days I get my asana and breath practise in I feel more calm, grounded and in a better head space to manage my busy life.
I react better, I am stronger and kinder.

There is a yogic thread woven through my day. The more regular my asana practise is, the better I feel so I make sure I have regular practice to serve and be a better person for myself, my family, friends and wider community.

I never stop learning which I love about yoga (and homeopathy).

Learn more about Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga or Trauma Informed Yoga, is a methodology for yoga created specifically to work with trauma. Trauma affects both mind and body. A therapy that does not include both mind and body is therefore incomplete. Body based practices aim to look at therapy as a bottom up (body to mind) therapeutic process, while psychological interventions are aimed to target trauma as a top down (mind to body)intervention. An ideal therapy combines both of these and trauma informed yoga is proposed as an evidenced based type of bottom up therapy.

How does it help me?

Restorative Yoga or Trauma Informed Yoga, improves concentration, focus, attention, and interoceptive awareness. The practice reduces anxiety, and anger. Therapeutic Yoga classes can help reduce the impact of exaggerated stress responses (fight, flight or freeze) as well as provide emotional regulation techniques. Regular practice will assist with relaxation, sleep, and mood. It can improve self-confidence and self-efficacy in those who have experienced trauma. Restorative Yoga also reduces somatic symptoms associated with helplessness, stress, and fear.

What is a class like?

I’ll consider what is going on in your organ systems; the adrenal system, the skeletal system, the endocrine system, the digestive system, the cardiovascular system and the lymphatic system and then which forms (postures) are most suitable when moving from a state of crisis to calm. In these classes I’m taking into account the mindset of a person with trauma, which could be past or present trauma and any physical symptoms you might have. I’ll also be considerate of triggers related to your own personal trauma.

Who can join?

Therapeutic Yoga or Trauma Informed Yoga is a very gentle, slow paced yoga class. It is for anyone who has suffered past trauma or is currently going through trauma – both mental or physical. Depression, anxiety and stress often manifest themselves in those who have suffered trauma. By creating a safe space, I am able to help you learn to calm your mind and regulate your physical responses and emotions through specific postures. Therapeutic Yoga is the ideal practice for those wanting to help free their minds from trauma which has affected them.

Learn more about Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a style of yoga popularised by K. Pattabhi Jois during the 20th century. Ashtanga yoga is often promoted as a modern-day form of classical Indian yoga. The style is energetic, synchronising breath with movements. Ashtanga yoga is a type of yoga based on eight principles (limbs) and consisting of a series of poses (asanas) executed in swift succession, combined with deep, controlled breathing (pranayama).

How does it help me?

When you practice Ashtanga yoga, it can help you really connect with yourself. It’s a form of yoga that you can practice in your daily life, bringing balance and focus to everything you do. Everything is conducted by the breath, your vital force, or ‘prana’. The greatest benefits of Ashtanga yoga are not only physical well-being and mental relaxation but also a renewed calmness and spirituality.

What is a class like?

During our Ashtanga yoga class, I will take you through a flowing set of poses (asanas). I will gently help adjust your posture and guide you with your breathwork. Yoga has been found to improve quality of life, immune system, reduce stress, anxiety, insomnia, depression and back pain. It has also been found to lower heart rate and blood pressure. Yoga also improves overall fitness, strength and flexibility.

Who can join?

Everyone can benefit from a regular Ashtanga yoga practice! Whether you’re a man, woman or child, young or old, bendy or inflexible, come along and see the difference in how a yoga class makes you feel. Ashtanga yoga is perfect for those looking to start their yoga journey. Each asana is adaptable in that as you progress, you can improve on the depth of your pose, as and when you and your body are ready. So, Ashtanga yoga is perfect for beginners!
